Shelby Scholars Summer Institute, also known as SSSI, is a signature experience available through Shelby County Schools that ignites students interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses and professions. It is designed for middle school students who have a readiness to excel in these areas. High-tech and cutting edge equipment and applications are among the aspect of the program. Student learning is accomplished through project and inquiry-based activities that reflect real world problem solving. Math/Science focused analytical equipment and applications with aggregate/disaggregate capabilities embedded in challenging curricular are among the aspects of theprogram. learning that reflect real world investigations. Other content areas, such as writing, geography, and economics, are integrated into each project to expose students to learning experience with a metacognitive approach. The goal of the program is to encourage shelby scholars to enroll in high-level science and math courses, further preparing them for post secondary STEM courses. A number of institute scholars are now participating in SCS's International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.
